Inside our courtyard
branches fell and lamps listed
while across the canal
huge trees snapped and twisted

But the damage from Wilma
had only begun
as the lights remained out
a week after the setting sun

Brother Scott and Mom
kindly lightened our load
by putting a generator
from Cleveland on the road.

It arrived in plenty of time
to keep the fridge cold
and make sure our home's walls
didn't start to grow mold.

So we established our home
as a great place for food
where neighbors could gather
to elevate their mood.

We thought nothing was broken
that we couldn't fix.
This was just Mother Nature
up to the same old tricks.

Then we saw what happened
to the Truffles Tree.
The damage was fatal,
that was plain to see.

Would Truffles Christmas gift
be just a lump of coal?
